Baltexpo's Golden Anchors for Polish Minehunters

news-details

Remontowa Shipbuilding, of the Remontowa Holding group, was awarded the Golden Anchor in the ‘Militaria’ category as a consortium leader for the delivery of serial mine countermeasure vessels – ORP Albatros and ORP Mewa – to the Polish Navy.

In their construction Remontowa Shipbuilding cooperated with OBR CTM and PGZ Naval Shipyard in Gdynia. Previously, the consortium had delivered the prototype vessel ORP Kormoran, which entered service in 2017.

Based on the experience gained during her operation, numerous modifications were made to the serial ships. They gained new equipment for verification of sea areas, and the artillery system was replaced with a more modern one.

ORP Albatros and ORP Mewa were delivered to the Navy in 2022. They are among the most modern vessels of their class. They are characterised by a multi-sensor concept, allowing them to operate both directly on and off the minefield. They are designed to search for, identify and combat sea mines and other objects and explosives remaining both in the water and on the seabed. This includes operations in the Polish economic zone as well as missions in tactical groups in the Baltic and North Sea.  The ships are also adapted to perform other auxiliary tasks as defined by the Navy.

The Kormoran II programme, which includes the construction of the prototype and serial minehunters ORP Albatros and ORP Mewa, is the first undertaking for the technical modernisation of naval forces successfully completed in 20 years. It is the work of exclusively Polish industry – from design, through construction, to the delivery of fully equipped, modern ships.

The successful implementation of the Kormoran II programme was appreciated by the Ministry of Defence, which entrusted the consortium with the construction of a further three minesweepers.

– I stand before you alone, but I represent a powerful group of people who have worked for this success, from designers, shipbuilders, suppliers and co-operators – I thank them for their efforts. It is impossible not to thank the Armament Agency and the Navy. Without them we would not have achieved this success. The best justification for this award is the fact that last year we signed a contract for three more minehunters. The first of these is in the process of being completed,” said Dariusz Jaguszewski, Remontowa Shipbuilding’s CEO, who received the award.
